How to Recognize a Romance Scam
Published August 26, 2026 · Check Before Trust Team
Romance scams follow a recognizable arc, even though the details change. Understanding the pattern makes it much easier to catch one early, before real money or personal information changes hands.
The relationship moves fast emotionally. Declarations of love, talk of a shared future, and pet names often arrive within days or weeks, long before you have had any real-world contact.
They always have a reason they cannot meet or video call. Overseas work, military deployment, or an offshore oil rig are common cover stories. Grainy or inconsistent photos, or a refusal to do a live video call, are strong warning signs.
A crisis eventually appears that only money can solve - a medical emergency, a stuck shipment, customs fees, or a "temporary" cash flow problem before a large inheritance or contract payment comes through.
They steer the conversation off the platform you met on and onto a messaging app, and often discourage you from discussing the relationship with friends or family who might raise concerns.
If you recognize this pattern in a relationship, pause before sending any money, and search the person's name, photos, or contact details. Reverse image searches on their profile photos are especially effective, since romance scammers frequently reuse stolen pictures across many fake profiles.
